# Permit required

> The Boogie Data API and MCP server are launching soon. Reports, fee calculators and methodology on this site are live now.

**Permit required:** Whether a town requires a permit or registration before a home can be rented short term.

## How we measure it

We read the ordinance the town or county publishes and record yes, no, or unknown when the text does not settle it.

## What it is not

Unknown means the published rule is unclear, not that no permit is needed.

## Where it appears in the data

Field names as the API returns them; each dataset's page in the API lists the field's type and unit.

- `permit_required` in dataset `str_regulation`
