# State preemption

**State preemption:** How far state law overrides a town's own short-term rental rules: fully, partly or not at all.

## How we measure it

We record full, partial, none or unknown from the state statute, with a note on what it covers.

## What it is not

Partial preemption can still leave a town free to tax or register rentals.

## Where it appears in the data

Field names as the API returns them; each dataset's page in the API lists the field's type and unit.
